When talking to my primary school aged kids about cyber safety I became aware that there are not many resources directed at young kids, and yet they are getting exposed to the internet, social media and smart phones younger and younger.
It’s important to get in as early as you can and talk about things like what can happen if you allow friends to take your photo and put it online, or what kind of information you are putting out into the world.
I’ve made a series of books as a resource for parents and teachers to use to foster discussions around some of the issues they might come across when using technology. This is a great range of books to get for home or for your schools – and there are plenty of printable activities to work through as well!
The Face Stealer educates kids on how you can lose control of a photo the second you send it to someone. This is a concept kids can understand way before you have to start talking about nudes – you don’t have to wait to have that discussion.
The Tiny Trick teaches kids to think twice before clicking past “I agree” pop-ups and educates them on how to manage app permissions.
The Fake Fact teaches kids how information travels and how to identify primary, secondary and tertiary sources of information. This is a great resource to help kids think twice before they believe what they hear.
The Greedy Game teaches kids about how games and apps are sometimes designed to get you to spend money. It empowers kids to understand how they work and identify when a game is unbalanced and becomes ‘pay to play’. It also gives an opportunity to discuss boundaries on interactions with gaming, budgeting and peer pressure.
Agatha’s Forest is a wellbeing resource on emotional naming that helps kids to identify what they are feeling and sit with complex emotions. It is a great introductory step to CBT practices, emotional regulation and self acceptance.
You can also ask your library to stock these books.
Update:
After some queries, I’ve decided to make The Fake Fact and The Tiny Trick available in PDF format for free download. Please refer people to this site to download and refrain from distributing copies yourselves. This protects my copywrite rights as author, producer and distributor of these works, and helps people to access not only these books but the supplementary printables I have made available here as well.
